Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,529, dated June 12, 1849.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS P. HAsLETT, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Machine for Protecting the Lungs Against the Inhalation of Injurious Substances; and I do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making al part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a descriptive view of the nose joint. Fig. 2 is a descriptive View of the filterer. Fig. 3 is a descriptive view of the tube and hook. Fig. t is a longitudinal section view of the nose joint, the same letters referring to like parts.

K is an elastic string.

J J are wire guards.

I is a nose piece shaped to fit the nostrils or the mout-h.

H is a chamber.

M is a movable cap made to slip on the chamber in a joint or sleeve like manner.

A and B are simple clapper valves and are attached in such a manner that they will vibrate freely.

A is the inhaling valve and is attached to the cap.

B is the exhaling valve and is attached to the chamber, those parts are all united forming one combination or body as represented When the piece the mouth I then term the combination a mouth joint. I thus make the joint applicable to either the nose or mouth.

Fig. 2 letter D is a filterer and is simply an arrangement of woolen fabric or other porous substance in such manner as to form within its self a complete chamber of globular or other shape having an opening at letter N. When the elasticity of the woolen fabric or other porous substance is not of sufficient strength to retain theform given to it I use a light wire frame over which I extend the woolen fabric or other porous substance.

The actionv mode of combining and applying the protector is as follows: The fil- I is shaped or made 'to fit terer is first moistened with water, then attach it to the joint by slipping it on cap M. The joint is then brought in conjunction with the nostrils by placing the nose piece so that its orifice C and bearing will correspond with the nostrils and rim of the nose. The string is then drawn over the head to the back part, at which point the elasticity of the string secures the joint to its place. Respiration is then carried on through the nostrils and joint. Upon inhaling the air enters through the filterer, thereby becoming filtered of the dustswith which it may be impregnated. The air, after having passed through the filterer, enters the chamber through the inhaling valve, and from thence proceeds to the lungs. Upon exhaling the air or breath is discharged through the exhaling valve, the inhaling Valve preventing its discharge through the filterer. To protect the lungs against the more volitile substances, such as gas, smoke, &c., I apply the protector thus: Detach the iilterer from the joint, then attach it to the lower or dist-ant end of the tube, the other end of which is attached to the joint in place of the filterer. The tube is then extended over the shoulder and down the side to within a few inches of the floor upon which the wearer may stand, or to any other point on the person (extending in no direction from the person). The tube is then secured to the dress by the several hooks attached to it for that purpose. Respiration isthen carried on through the tube which conducts the lower strata of atmosphere to be inhaled.

The utility of the valves consists in their protecting the lungs from inhaling its own impurities. The manner in which they thus protect is by causing the exhaled breath to be discharged through the exhaling valve instead of back through the filterer, in which case the impurities of the breath would become attached to the filterer, part of which impurities, upon inspiration, is carried back to the lungs, together with the amount of breath remaining in the lterer.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. I claim the nose or mouth joint having the piece I made to fit the nostrils or the mouth in combination with the valves A and B for the purpose of causing the air to enter and be discharged through separate orifices the same as entered in the confidential as herein described.

2. In combination With the said nose or mouth joint and valves I claim the filterer 5 D either With or Without the tube E as described.

I offer this description of my lung protector as containing the improvements on archives of the Patent Ofiice on the 26th of 10 November, 1847.

Google Patents is a search engine from Google that indexes patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which are taken from the original USPTO database (which is in the public domain). All 7 million patents have been put in the database. Optical character recognition (OCR) has been performed on the pages to make them searchable. This searchability includes all US patents.

The service was launched on December 14, 2006. Review and criticisms

The indexing is not perfect. Reportedly, as of 14 December, not all IBM patents were locatable, as searching for IBM patents retrieved only 1,197 results on Google Patents, but that IBM received nearly 3,000 patents in 2005 alone.cite web|url=http://www.forbes.com/technology/2006/12/14/google-patent-search-tech-media_cx_rr_1214patents.html|title=Digital Media - Google Searches Patents|author=Rachel Rosmarin|work=Forbes.com site|accessmonthday=December 29|accessyear=2006]

Unlike Google Patents, Espacenet includes US patent applications as well as granted patents. European Patent Office, [http://www.european-patent-office.org/news/epidosnews/epd_1_07/pinews_0107_en.pdf "Google launches patent search facility"] , "Patent Information News", Issue 1, 2007, page 2. ] In terms of response time however, the performance of Google Patents is considered to be very good.

Example

An example patent may illustrate what the service can offer and what things a researcher may need to watch out for. A Brown truss is a type of bridgetruss, used in covered bridges. INSTRUMENT FOR OPENING CANS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,063, dated January 5, 18.58

To all whom t may concern.

Be it known that I, EZRA J. WARNER, of the city of lNfTaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement` in Instruments for Cutting Open Sealed Tin Cans and BoXes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a view of the whole instrument, showing the looped bar, (as Fig. 5,) swung across the piercer bar. Fig. 2, is a view of the same, showing another position of the looped bar. Fig. 3, is a view of the shaft, with the piercer bar. Fig. 4, is a view of the curved cutter, (as in Figs. l and 2). Fig. 5, is a view of the looped bar, (as in Figs. 1 and 2.)

I make the shank, A, (including t-he piercer-bar, B,) of steel, substantially, as represented in Figs. l, 2, and 3, with a suitable handle, as C, Figs. l and 2, and I make the point of the piercer bar, B, substantially, in the form represented at d, Figs. l, 2, &c., I make the curved cutter, a, of cast steel, substantially in the form shown in Figs. l, 2, and 4, and attach it to the shank, A, (as at 5,) by passing the end, a, Fig. 4, into afdovetail slot, so that it may be readily removed, in case of its being injured, or when I desire to change the position of the cutting edge from one side of the looped or swinging bar c, to the other or to have it cut in the center, between the two sides, and I bevel the edge on either side, or on both sides, according to the position in which it is to be placed for cutting. I make the looped bar, c, of steel, or any other suitable material, substantially in the form shown in Fig. 5, (and indicated in Figs. 1 and 2,) and attach it to the piercer bar, B, (near its end,) by a fulcrum or joint pin, as shown at c, Figs. l and 2, (and indicated in Fig. 3,) so that it may readily swing, or rock, from the position shown in-F ig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2.

To use this instrument, I swing the loop bar substantially to the position shown at c, in Fig. l, take hold of the handle, C, and press the point, a, of the piercer-bar, B, through the tin in the desired place, turn the instrument, and insert the point of the curved cutter, a, through the perforation already made, (when the looped or swinging bar, c, will be substantially in the position shown in Fig. 2,) and work the handle, C, (in the manner of a brake.) Then the handle, C, is moved in the direction indicated by the dart in Fig. 2, the loop bar, c, will be held against the surface of the tin, while the curved cutter, a, will be forced between its parts and cut the tin smoothly through, and when the handle is moved in the opposite direction the instrument may be pushed forward for another cut, and so on, thus allowing the operator to cut as fast as he can move his hand.

The advantages of my improvement over all other instruments for this purpose consist in the smoothness and rapidity of the cut, as well as the ease with which it is worked, as a child may use it without ditliculty, or risk, and in making the curved cutter susceptible of being removed, so that if one should be injured it may be replaced by another, thus saving all the other portions of the instrument, and consequently much expense, and in that the piercer will perforate the tin wit-hout causing the liquid to fly out, as it does in all those which make the perforation by percussion of any kind.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the curved cutter, (L,) with the looped bar, (0,) when constructed, and made to operate; substantially,

as herein described.

База ФИПС позволяет найти патенты, которые зарегистрированы именно в России, но нам нужно проверить весь мир. Значит, нужно обращаться в базы данных других стран. И тут встает как раз тот самый вопрос - а есть ли одна такая большая база, в которой есть все?

Конечно нет. Поэтому нужно смотреть все страны по очереди. Перебирать все страны, одну за другой, осваивать язык, переводить на него ключевые слова, задавать их, читать названия патентов. Испугались? Не все так страшно: есть специальные базы, которые объединяют множество стран, и все становится сильно проще.

Свободный доступ к патентам США, опубликованным с 1790 года. (Полнотекстовый поиск доступен только для патентов, опубликованных, начиная с 1976 года. Патенты, опубликованные в 1790-1975 гг. доступны для поиска только по номеру патента в американской классификации).

  • Существуют две системы поиска. Их можно комбинировать. 
  • Это наиболее сложный, но зато гибкий и мощный поиск. Ну а как иначе - США - самая патентующая в мире страна, которая идет с большим отрывом от ближайших соседей - Японии и Германии.
  • Есть два раздела - Issued Patents (PatFT) и Published Applications (AppFT). 
  • PatFT - информация о выданных патентах
  • AppFT - информация о патентных заявках. (Поиск на новизну надо проводить в обоих разделах). 
  • В базе существует два поисковых массива: Bibliographic Database и Full Text and Image Database, по которым возможен поиск трех видов. 
  • Первый и наиболее часто используемый поиск информации - по ключевым словам в отдельной части патента (название, реферат и т.п.), либо во всем тексте патента с использованием логических операторов AND, OR, ANDNOT, XOR (Boolean search). 
  • Второй тип поиска - поиск патента по его номеру согласно американской или международной патентной классификации (Patent number search). 
  • Третий тип - (Manual Search) позволяет производить сортировку патентов по времени поступления, имени, города, страны патентодержателя, тематике патента, по ссылкам на патент.

  • Полный поиск только на японском языке. На английском тоже можно искать, но надо идти в рефераты и там можно искать автора, название и ключевые слова.

Патентное ведомство США (USPTO) и Google объединились, с целью массового обеспечения бесплатного публичного доступа к данным о патентах и торговых марках.До сих пор, публичные данные USPTO массово были представлены только в качестве платных услуг. По оценкам USPTO, будет доступно около 10 терабайт информации.

USPTO в настоящее время не располагает технической базой для массового обеспечения общественности этой информацией. Но понимая, что такие данные необходимо предоставлять бесплатно и в электронном формате, нашли способ предоставлять эту информацию в виде сотрудничества с компанией Google, которая располагает необходимой технической базой.

Патентный поиск: бесплатные интернет-ресурсы - iSearch

Патентный поиск - обязательный этап научного исследования, при котором осуществляется процесс поиска в патентных фондах документов, соответствующих теме запроса.

Патентный поиск проводится для следующих целей:

  • Проверка уникальности изобретения.
  • Обзор последних новинок в области, исследуется.
  • Выяснение, не посягает изобретение на чужую интеллектуальную собственность.
  • Определение сфер использования нового изобретения.
  • Поиск патентов на изобретение, полезную модель.
  • Определение состояния исследований в интересующей области.
  • Поиск дополнительных информационных материалов.
  • Сбор информации о конкурентах.
  • Нахождение решения технических проблем.

Патентный поиск осуществляется с помощью информационно-поисковых систем и выполняется вручную или с использованием соответствующих компьютерных программ.

Существуют бесплатные интернет-ресурсы (базы данных), которые могут помочь в короткие сроки достичь наиболее эффективных результатов. Приведем некоторые из них с краткими характеристиками.

USPTO - полнотекстовая база данных патентного ведомства США, насчитывающая несколько миллионов патентов с 1976 г., которые хранятся в текстовом формате HTMLта графическом формате TIFF. Патенты с 1790 г. до 1976 г. сохраняются только в графическом формате. Google Patent Search - база данных Google состоит из патентов, содержащихся в базе USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Расширенный поиск позволяет осуществлять поиск по таким критериям как автор, название, номер патента, дата. Есть удобная возможность увеличения текста (zoom) и иллюстраций патентов. Поисковая система использует специальную технологию распознавания текста на фотографиях, которая позволяет осуществлять поиск даже по тексту на отсканированных патентах. Canadian Patents Database - поисковая система патентной службы Канады, предназначенная для поиска в базе данных канадских патентов. Простой и удобный поиск. Возможно отображение графических иллюстраций к патентам. В базе данных свыше 1.9 млн. патентов, начиная с 1869 года. [email protected] - Европейское патентное ведомство (European Patent Office). В настоящее время база содержит более 60 млн.патентнихзаявокіпатентів. Через сайт Европейской патентной организации можно провести поиск патентов по БД: "Worldwide", Европейской патентной организации (EPO), Всемирной организации интеллектуальной собственности (WIPO).

База данных "Worldwide" позволяет искать информацию об опубликованных патентные документы из более чем 80 стран и регионов. Это крупнейшее собрание документов в Espacenet. В базах данных «EP - esp @ cenet» и "WIPO - esp @ cenet" можно найти патенты опубликованы только за последние два года. Раньше документы находятся в БД "Worldwide". На главной странице сайта отображается список последних опубликованных патентов. Поиск в базах данных проводится на английском языке, но для гарантии целесообразно повторить процедуру поиска на языке страны, которая регистрировала патент, так как не во всех патентах присутствует английский перевод названия и реферата.

УКРПАТЕНТ –  база данных патентов Украины. По состоянию на 01.12.2010 года всего зарегистрировано 305840 документов, среди них около 100 тыс. патентов на изобретения и 55 тыс. патентов на полезные модели. На сайте создан поисковик в БД 'Изобретения зарубежных стран", содержащий информацию, которая поступает от 42 патентных ведомств различных государств и 2 региональных организаций. РОСПАТЕНТ - Российское патентное ведомство - Федеральная служба по интеллектуальной собственности, патентам и товарным знакам.У информационной поисковой системе возможен поиск по изобретениям, рефераты патентных документов на русском и английском языках, перспективных изобретениях, полезных моделях. По состоянию на конец 2010 г. в базе данных Роспатента насчитывается около 2 млн. документов на изобретения и полезные модели. ЕАПВ - Евразийское патентное ведомство. Имеет более 30 локальных патентных баз данных, в которых на конец 2010 г. содержится более 35 млн. патентных документов. В локальных БД представлены патентные документы ЕАПВ, ВОИС, Европейского патентного ведомства, патентного ведомства США, России (с 1924г), а также патентные документы стран СНГ и национальных патентных ведомств стран-членов ЕАПО. В системе реализованы средства поиска во внешних патентных БД цифровых библиотек интеллектуальной собственности (IPDL) и в информационных системах: ESP @ CENET, EPOLINE, JOPAL и др. SIPO – государственное ведомство интеллектуальной собственности Китайской Народной Республики. Предоставляет свободный доступ к документам на китайском и английском языках, начиная с 1985 г. Есть возможность перевода отдельных документов с помощью технологии машинного перевода CPMT. Patent Abstracts of Japan (PAJ)  - базы данных Патентного ведомства Японии. Предлагает доступ к БД патентов и товарных знаков Японии с 1993 года на английском языке. На данный момент в БД находится более 4.7 млн. документов. WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) - Всемирная Организация Интеллектуальной Собственности. Патентный поиск в БД WIPO осуществляется с помощью поисковой службы PATENTSCOPE ®, которая обеспечивает бесплатный доступ к Международных патентных заявок и национальным / региональным патентным документам. Патентная база данных ВОИС содержит информацию о более чем 1.8 млн. опубликованных международных патентах. На сайте появился новый поисковый инструмент, который позволяет искать не только в коллекции международных патентных заявок, но и в патентных коллекциях Африканськой Региональной Организации Интеллектуальной Собственности (ARIPO), Аргентины, Бразилии, Кубы, Израиля, Марокко, Мексики, Республики Корея, Сингапура, Южной Африки, Испании и Вьетнама. Patent Lens – онлайн сервис патентного поиска, созданный независимой некоммерческой организацией Cambia. Позволяет поиск патентов из США, Европы, Австралии и ВОИС. БД содержит более 10 млн. документов. WikiPatents - бесплатная поисковая система патентов, насчитывает более 15 млн. патентов. Постоянно растущая база данных WikiPatents включает патенты и патентные заявки из США, Германии, Японии, Великобритании, Канады, Франции, Испании и Швейцарии. О каждом патент выдает краткую информацию, присутствует быстрая навигация по изображениям патента, позволяет загрузки патентов в различных форматах TXT, RTF (Word), PDF. Отображает на карте место жительства изобретателя. WikiPatents также позволяет переводить с помощью технологии Google, комментировать и оценивать любые патенты. Surf IP – проект ведомства интеллектуальной собственности Сингапура. Позволяет вести поиск в патентных базах данных Европейского патентного бюро (EPO), США (USPTO), WIPO, Великобритании (UK-IPO), Японии (JPO-IPDL), Тайване (TIPO), Канады (CIPO), Китая (SIPO), Таиланд (TIPIC), Кореи (KIPO), Сингапура (IPOS). Free Patents Online – поисковая система, обеспечивающая быстрый доступ к миллионам патентов и патентных заявок. Это одна из самых мощных, быстрых и простых систем патентного поиска в Интернете. Free patents online позволяет осуществлять поиск в БД патентного ведомства США, Европейского патентного ведомства, Всемирной организации интеллектуальной собственности и Японском патентном ведомстве. Зарегистрированным надаебильш широкие возможности, например, уведомления о поступлении новых патентов. На сайте запущен интересную систему отображения патентов на карте мира. PRIORSMART - это новый бесплатный ресурс, обеспечивающий доступ к более 60 онлайн патентных баз данных. Позволяет производить поиск по названию, рефератом, формулоюи изобретения, именем владельца патента, именем изобретателя, описанием и МПК. Интерфейс представлен испанском, английском, французском, немецком, русском, японском, китайском и корейском языках.
